Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join SAIL?
Anyone interested in AI safety! We welcome students at all levels (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD), researchers, postdocs, and professionals. No specific background required - just curiosity about making AI safer.
Do I need prior knowledge of AI safety?
Not at all! Many of our members started with no background in AI safety. Our reading group and community discussions are designed to help people learn. We provide recommended readings for newcomers.
How much time commitment is involved?
It's flexible! You can participate as much or as little as you'd like. Reading group sessions are 1.5 hours bi-weekly. Weekly meetups are informal and drop-in friendly. Research projects vary in commitment.
Can I get academic credit for participation?
Research projects through partner labs can count toward semester projects, Master's theses, or independent study credits. Check with your program coordinator and the supervising professor.
What if I'm not at EPFL?
While we're based at EPFL, we welcome visitors and remote participation where possible. Our Telegram group is open to anyone interested in AI safety discussions.
How can I contribute research ideas?
We're always interested in new research directions! Share your ideas in our Telegram group, bring them to weekly meetups, or email us directly. We can help connect you with potential collaborators or supervisors.
